WBS - A project Management Tool

In software industry, I have came across lots of software engineering, quality management tools and processes. Process oriented companies have QMS stuffed with forms, procedures, templates and checklists for many necessary and un-necessary things.

One project management tool that is less understood and least used is WBS.

WBS i.e. Work Breakdown Structure

Instead of a project management tool many people in the industry misunderstand it as mere software estimation technique (That too something with no mathematical basis)

WBS by definition is hierarchical representation of all the work needed to be done in order to complete a project.

WBS could be created by logically decomposing project deliverables and identifying the work associated to complete the deliverables.
The main use of WBS is to ensure that all the work and only the work needed to complete the deliverables is done, thus no missing requirements and no scope creep.
The other use (that many people surely know) is that decomposition helps identification of leaf level nodes of hierarchy (called work packages) which could be considered for time & cost estimation.

More on this later..........
